RRS arrests driver who stole boss’ car to attend Valentine’s Day party in Lagos

One Emmanuel John, a 26-year-old driver, has been apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Lagos, for allegedly duplicating his boss’ ( Mrs Flora Ighalo) car key and attempting to abscond with it.
John had a week before his plan, duplicated his boss’ Toyota Corolla key without her Knowledge, The Nation gathered.

Supreme Court to rule on Saraki’s trial, Friday


The Supreme Court will on Friday determine whether or not to stop the trial of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on charges of false assets declaration.
A seven-man bench led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, had on December 4, 2015, fixed Friday for judgment after entertaining arguments on an appeal by Saraki, with the Federal Government urging the apex court ‎to dismiss the Senate President’s case and allow the trial before the CCT to continue.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh has arrived the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for the continuation of his ongoing trial.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had arraigned Metuh on a seven count charge of money laundering.
The anti-graft agency is accusing him of collecting the sum of N400m from the former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd), money which it alleged was part of the funds meant for the procurement of arms for the military.

In a radio broadcast to celebrate Wednesday’s Supreme Court judgment which held that he was validly elected governor of Akwa Ibom state, Udom Emmanuel, has asked the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state to join him in the task of bringing development to the state.
“I hereby call on our brothers and sisters from the other side of the political divide to close ranks and join me, in moving Akwa Ibom state to surpass superior performance and ensure development that is sustainable, impactful and expansive,” Mr. Emmanuel said in the radio broadcast which was aired immediately after the Supreme Court in Abuja delivered the judgment in his favour.

Some human rights activists in Lagos on Tuesday advised workers not to vote for state governors owing arrears of salaries in future elections.
The activists told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the only way the people could get good governance was to vote in the right leaders.

Re-run Polls: INEC Disqualifies Fresh Candidates


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday released timetable for Senatorial and House of Representatives rerun elections across the country barring fresh candidates from participating in the contest.

The commission, in a release by the Secretary, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, fixed February and March for the elections even as it disqualified some candidates from partaking in the exercise. It said only candidates and parties that partook in the March 28, 2015 National Assembly/presidential elections would be eligible for the rerun election.

Female Lawyer Arrested In Connection With Husband’s Death



The troubles in some marriage these days ehn..! A young lawyer, Yewande Oyediran, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the death of her husband, Mr. Lowo. The husband resided in France, but had been coming home regularly since he got married to Yewande.

Mr. Lowo’s family are accusing Yewande of stabbing her husband to death. But how come?

A family source, who is a brother to the deceased, said the husband was into property development and had come home in December 2015, to execute a job in Nigeria.

WHO Declares Zika Global Emergency

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has described cases of microcephaly (abnormal smallness of the head) and neurological disorders linked to Zika virus in Brazil as an "extraordinary event" and a public health threat to other parts of the world.
Director-General of WHO Dr Margaret Chan declared: "the recent cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders reported in Brazil, following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014, constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern".

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed March 19 for rerun elections in Rivers State.

This came on the heels of a declaration by Governor Nyesom Wike that January 27 every year would become an annual public holiday following the Supreme Court judgment on that date which validated his election.

INEC’s decision on the date of the rerun elections was conveyed to journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday through a terse text message from the Public Relations Officer of the commission in Rivers State, Anthonia Nwobi.

Country Seeks Big Loans From World Bank, Other Lenders

Nigeria is seeking loans from the World Bank, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and other lenders to help cover this year's massive budget deficit, the government and bank officials said.
The deficit is projected at 2.2 trillion naira ($11 billion, 10 billion euros) out of a total budget of 6.08 trillion naira, they said late Monday, confirming projections first given in President Muhammadu Buhari's December budget announcement.

He said the best development in the industry happened under the then General Olusegun Obasajo administration under which he served as commissioner for petroleum.

The new commander of the UN Mission for Stabilisation of Congo (MONUSCO), Gen. Derrick Mgwebi, on Tuesday, officially took over his office at the mission’s headquarters in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
MONUSCO’s Spokesman, Felix Bass, said the 59-year-old South African officer replaces Brazilian Carlos Dos- Santos-Cruz, who ended his mission towards the end of last year after serving for two years.

Also on Tuesday, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike reiterated his warning to those planning to rig the rerun elections in Rivers state, noting that they will be treated as armed robbers by the people.
