MMM Nigeria not yet crashed!



There has been some reports flying around about a purported folding up of Ponzi Scheme, MMM Nigeria in Lagos which have sent “investors” in the scheme into early panic. FINANCIAL WATCH can report that the reports are false.

Although this can serve as a respite, but analyst believes MMM Nigeria’s crash is not if, but when. Already, there has been been several warnings from Nigeria’s Security and exchange commission (SEC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to Nigerians against investing in such ponzi schemes.

Metal-loving vicar wants to turn his church into a gig venue




A vicar who is a fan of Metallica and Nine Inch Nails has applied to the for a live music licence so that his London church can become a gig venue.

Father Tom Plant has written to Camden Council stating that he wants St Michael’s Church to be able to host gigs four nights a week to crowds of 300 people.



Fr Plant, who became the vicar of St Michael’s in January, is seeking to install a bar and sound stage as well as a sound system at the church.

BREAKING: ‘Deadly blast’ hits police bus in Istanbul

At least 11 people have been killed by a blast which targeted a police bus in central Istanbul, officials say.
The remote-controlled device was reportedly detonated as the vehicle passed through the busy Vezneciler district at the morning rush hour.
No group has yet said it carried out the attack.

Violence in Turkey has escalated recently as a result of tensions with Kurdish separatists and the conflict in neighbouring Syria.

The explosion happened near the city’s historic Beyazit Square neighbourhood, a major tourist attraction.
At least 36 other people were injured, Istanbul’s governor said.
Pictures showed the wreckage of a bus destroyed and the facade of nearby buildings damaged. Armed police were also seen next to the site.
Reports said gunfire was heard in the area after the blast.

Last week, the JNDLF threatened to launch six mis­siles beginning from today.

Ex-NNPC MD set to be named OPEC secretary-general

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is likely to choose Nigeria’s Mohammed Barkindo, a former head of state oil firm NNPC, as the next secretary-general of the producer group, three sources with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has been looking for a replacement for Libya’s Abdullah al-Badri, who was elected acting secretary-general in December until the end of July after serving full terms.
Barkindo led the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation from 2009 to 2010.

At least 100,000 people were trapped Friday along Syria’s border with Turkey after the Islamic State group swept through rebel territory in Aleppo province, rights groups and activists said.
The shock IS advance on two rebel-held towns came as the jihadist group is facing an offensive further east in its own heartland of Raqa province.

Ntel to launch LTE services this week

Nigerian telco Ntel has announced plans for its own LTE network. Lagos and Abuja will be covered first.
Ntel stated that it will be launching a 4G network covering Lagos and Abuja, which will go live this Friday. Ntel plans to widen network coverage as soon as these two cities’ networks are completed.
The new network needs the approval of the Nigerian telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), however this is not seen as a problem and Ntel expects permission in the next few days.

Fuel Scarcity Cripples NSE's Trading Activities

The lingering scarcity of petrol, which has brought virtually every human activity to a standstill in every part of Lagos, has also affected trading activities at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), where trading on stocks and bonds has recorded an unprecedented poor attendance since the beginning of the week.
The poor performance of the market on Monday was attributed to the inability of many stockbrokers to be physically present in the market. And as a result, equity transactions on the NSE re-opened for the week on a downturn, causing the market capitalisation to depreciate by N54 billion on Monday.

Buhari ordered merging of sports ministry, NSC – Minister


President Muhammadu Buhari gave the directive for the merger of the National Sports Commission with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, the minister in charge, Mr. Solomon Dalung has said. Supreme Court to rule on Saraki’s trial, Friday


The Supreme Court will on Friday determine whether or not to stop the trial of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on charges of false assets declaration.
A seven-man bench led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, had on December 4, 2015, fixed Friday for judgment after entertaining arguments on an appeal by Saraki, with the Federal Government urging the apex court ‎to dismiss the Senate President’s case and allow the trial before the CCT to continue.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh has arrived the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for the continuation of his ongoing trial.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had arraigned Metuh on a seven count charge of money laundering.
The anti-graft agency is accusing him of collecting the sum of N400m from the former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd), money which it alleged was part of the funds meant for the procurement of arms for the military.

In a radio broadcast to celebrate Wednesday’s Supreme Court judgment which held that he was validly elected governor of Akwa Ibom state, Udom Emmanuel, has asked the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state to join him in the task of bringing development to the state.
“I hereby call on our brothers and sisters from the other side of the political divide to close ranks and join me, in moving Akwa Ibom state to surpass superior performance and ensure development that is sustainable, impactful and expansive,” Mr. Emmanuel said in the radio broadcast which was aired immediately after the Supreme Court in Abuja delivered the judgment in his favour.

Re-run Polls: INEC Disqualifies Fresh Candidates


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday released timetable for Senatorial and House of Representatives rerun elections across the country barring fresh candidates from participating in the contest.

The commission, in a release by the Secretary, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, fixed February and March for the elections even as it disqualified some candidates from partaking in the exercise. It said only candidates and parties that partook in the March 28, 2015 National Assembly/presidential elections would be eligible for the rerun election.

WHO Declares Zika Global Emergency

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has described cases of microcephaly (abnormal smallness of the head) and neurological disorders linked to Zika virus in Brazil as an "extraordinary event" and a public health threat to other parts of the world.
Director-General of WHO Dr Margaret Chan declared: "the recent cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders reported in Brazil, following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014, constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern".

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed March 19 for rerun elections in Rivers State.

This came on the heels of a declaration by Governor Nyesom Wike that January 27 every year would become an annual public holiday following the Supreme Court judgment on that date which validated his election.

INEC’s decision on the date of the rerun elections was conveyed to journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday through a terse text message from the Public Relations Officer of the commission in Rivers State, Anthonia Nwobi.

Country Seeks Big Loans From World Bank, Other Lenders

Nigeria is seeking loans from the World Bank, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and other lenders to help cover this year's massive budget deficit, the government and bank officials said.
The deficit is projected at 2.2 trillion naira ($11 billion, 10 billion euros) out of a total budget of 6.08 trillion naira, they said late Monday, confirming projections first given in President Muhammadu Buhari's December budget announcement.

He said the best development in the industry happened under the then General Olusegun Obasajo administration under which he served as commissioner for petroleum.

The new commander of the UN Mission for Stabilisation of Congo (MONUSCO), Gen. Derrick Mgwebi, on Tuesday, officially took over his office at the mission’s headquarters in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
MONUSCO’s Spokesman, Felix Bass, said the 59-year-old South African officer replaces Brazilian Carlos Dos- Santos-Cruz, who ended his mission towards the end of last year after serving for two years.
