We are not gays – Mugabe tells United Nations General Assembly

Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, has declared that Zimbabweans are not gays.
The Zimbabwean leader who has always re-echoed respect and continual human rights as the obligation of all states has never hidden his stance on anti-gay campaign.
While addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, he further reiterated the campaign against gay, insisting that the act was unafrican. “We are not gays,” Mugabe said.

Nigerian Senators pass vote of confidence on embattled leader, Saraki

Nigerian Senators on Tuesday passed a vote of confidence on the senate president, Bukola Saraki, a move apparently aimed at shoring up support for the embattled leader who is facing corruption charges.
Mr. Saraki was arraigned last week before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on a 13-count charge bordering on corruption and false declaration of assets.
He denied wrongdoing and said the trial was politically motivated.
The senate met Tuesday for the first time since Mr. Saraki appeared before the tribunal and swiftly passed a vote of confidence on him.

Wike laughs off APC’s call for probe of Rivers killings

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State yesterday dismissed call by the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, leadership in the state for the probe of killings witnessed during the last general elections in Rivers, saying it was laughable.
Wike, who disclosed this in Port Harcourt, the state capital, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sir, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, claimed that the APC and its leadership were frustrated.

More than 11,300 people have died of Ebola in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia in an outbreak that was declared in March 2014 and is rated the world's worst.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday in Abuja called for a thorough investigation into the two major incidents that led to fatalities during the 2015 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
This is contained in a statement signed by NLC President Ayuba Wabba, while commiserating with the families of the 767 Muslim faithful who died in a stampede on the way to Jamrat Complex (Stoning Site) in Mina, Saudi Arabia.

Senate President's legal team makes counter-move

The last is yet to be heard of the bench warrant issued for the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki's  arrest by theCode of Conduct Tribunal.
Senator Saraki said in a tweet that he expected to respect the decision of the superior court.
In what seems to be a counter-move, the legal team of the Senate President, led by Mr. Mahmud Magaji (SAN) revealed that "We have been able to file a notice of appeal as well as stay of execution. When you have a valid notice of appeal and stay of execution, it puts the order of the court so granted in abeyance, unless and until the final determination of that content of that order that is being challenged at the Court of Appeal. That is the position of the law.”

Over 4,700 migrants have been rescued off the coast of Libya as they tried to reach Europe , an Italian coast guard disclosed.

Tens of thousands of people, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, have tried to cross the Mediterranean this year, often dangerously packed into small vessels unsuitable for the voyage.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, must appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal Tuesday, 10am, to face a 13-count charge of alleged corruption, the tribunal ruled Monday.
Mr. Saraki failed to appear before the tribunal during the sitting, despite an arrest warrant issued against him by the tribunal last Friday.
He is facing charges bordering on corruption and false assets declaration.

Tribunal upholds election of Lagos Senator

An Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Lagos has dismissed a petition by Segun Adewale of the Peoples’ Democratic Party challenging the election of Solomon Adeola of the All Progressives Congress.

The tribunal said that the PDP failed to show any burden of proof that the election did not comply with the Electoral Act.

It awarded a cost of N20, 000 against the PDP.

Reports say President Buhari cancelled his official tour to Cross River State.
Linda Ikeji reports that “The presidency attributed the shift to a letter written to the president by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Nana Fatima Mede. She claimed that the proposed highway, if allowed to go on, would cut through the Cross River National Park."
The President was supposed to perform ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a 260km superhighway.
Adding that “The letter claimed that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the proposed road was yet to be carried out."

Swiss authorities have approved the extradition of Uruguayancitizen Eugenio Figueredo to the United States as part of an investigation into suspected corruption in soccer, the government said on Thursday.
The former vice-president of the South American Football Confederation and former vice-president of world soccer bodyFIFA was arrested in Zurich along with six other FIFA officials on May 27 on the basis of a U.S. arrest warrant.
He has 30 days to appeal against the decision by the Swiss Federal Office of Justice to allow extradition, the FOJ said in a statement.

Ozekhome says Hameed Ali's appointment is illegal

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome in a statement, declared as illegal, President Buhari's appointment of a retired soldier, Hameed Ali, as the boss of the Nigeria Customs Service.
According to Punch Newspapers, he said 

“The appointment of Hameed Ali has, particularly, raised serious issues of propriety, having been brought in from outside the customs service. By Section 3:11:1 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria official gazette No 24, vol 89, dated March 25, 2002, the choice of the CG of Customs shall be by appointment of a suitable Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs."

Leaders of a coup in Burkina Faso have named Gilbert Diendere, a general in the elite presidential guard, to head a transitional council, the soldiers said in a statement broadcast on state-run television on Thursday.
The statement also announced the closure of the West Africannation's land and air borders as well as the implementation of an overnight curfew.
On Thursday, soldiers fired warning shots to disperse a crowd of more than 100 people gathered in the central Independence Square to protest against the presidential guard, a Reuters witness said.

Residents of Santiago, Chilean capital fled their homes  on Wednesday, September 16, after a  massive earthquake shook the foundation of their buildings.

AS part of efforts to end the importation of refined petroleum products into the country, the Federal Government has granted licence to Epic Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Ltd to build a 107,000bpd refinery in Oporoma, Bayelsa State.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Barango Matthew Wenke Jnr., who disclosed this to journalists in Lagos recently during a chat, said the project would cost about U.S. $30 billion, adding that the fund had been secured.

The Chairman (Media and Publicity), North-west zone of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Idi Mohammed Farouk, has revealed how President Muhammadu Buhari saved $297m on the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery.
In a recent interview with Daily Trust, Farouk disclosed that with the appointment of Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, the country merely spent $10m on the rehabilitation of the refinery which was supposed to cost $297m.
